Character Name/Alias: Nie Mingjue / Chifeng-Zun
Character age: 29
Canon: Mo Dao Zu Shi (Book Universe)
Canon point: Post-Death Via Qi Deviation
History: Here!
Appearance:
Standing at 191cm (6'3"), Nie Mingjue is what his canon would consider the masculine ideal. He is broad-shouldered and has a slender waist; he is fit with toned muscle and chiseled features. He is generally regarded as handsome, to the point where he is considered the seventh most wanted bachelor in the entire cultivation realm, only thrown back by his intense presence and near-persistent scowl. Since he was a leader of one of the four great sects back home, he was most often known for wearing his family colors of greys, gold, and greens with embellishments of beast motifs. He was never seen without his weapon back home, the single-bladed saber for which his family's fighting and cultivation style were infamous.

Personality:
Nie Mingjue is an insightful, devoted, and loyal man. Intense in personality and strength, he has a high moral compass while driven to protect and represent his family. He carries many burdens, living by the strict conditions society place upon him. Because of this, he expects the best from himself and those around him, seeking unrealistic ideals to achieve to maintain peace and prosperity.
Mingjue often comes off as intimidating. Being a firm believer in following the 'righteous path,' he usually pushes those ideals onto others around him. His short temper and penchant for anger exemplify his intimidating aura and are crucial in his character arc.
The Nie Sect has a family secret many leaders take to their graves.
Coming from a long line of butchers, those who reign from Qinghe Nie gain their abilities by harnessing the souls of the beasts their family had slaughtered through countless lifetimes. Mingjue, the representative of his family, takes great pride in this, to the point of obsession. He constantly practices and works out his body and swordsmanship and pushes others in his sect to do the same. But there is a price to pay for such an art, and it is one Mingjue willingly chooses to ignore. The more the family harnesses such energy, the more the enraged spirits feed on their emotional weaknesses and drive them to fits of paranoia, despair, and rage—something which Mingjue escalates due to his obsessive nature.
Mingjue's habit of embracing his rage does not distract from the fact that every one of his actions had been laced with good intentions. Mingjue is shown to be hardworking, with many ambitions for the betterment of his clan. He grew up cherishing his parents. And even after his mother's passing and his father taking on a new wife, he had mutual respect for her and the younger half-brother he acquired through it. It was this unbridled love that made the pain he felt worse when he ultimately lost his stepmother and father as well.
At a young age, he became a clan leader and took a burden of responsibility that wasn't easy for a teenager. But he was resolute in not only making his clan survive but thrive. Throughout his time as leader, the series started that he singlehandedly made the Nie clan stronger than at any other time in its history. No longer was their family looked down upon by the other families, not while Mingjue kept his place on the throne.
But keeping his family strong was far from the only thing that drove him. He also wanted revenge on the man who killed his father, Wen Ruohan. He was willing to risk every part of himself for this goal, no matter its cost—willfully ignoring the repercussions that came with it. As highly as Mingjue regards his family and people, he seems to have a surprisingly low sense of self-preservation. He is the type who will willingly sacrifice himself, no matter what the cost, if it means it would fulfill a better future.
He places a high standard on both himself and those around him. For example, he puts a lot of responsibility on the person taking his position, his younger half-brother, Nie Huaisang. Despite loving his brother with all of his heart, he comes off as outwardly cold dismissive and controlling.
Despite what his bouts of anger had shown, Nie Mingjue is a surprisingly analytical and logical man—always thinking a few steps ahead. This tactical mindset made him one of the three key players in winning the war against Wen Ruohan. But it was also why Mingjue was so harsh to his brother. He felt he was preparing Huaisong for a future in which neither could escape, determined to make sure that his brother was ready to take his place.
But unfortunately, his stubbornness caused a rift formed between the brothers. Combined with the strained relations created outside the clan, these disputes would be the beginnings of what would cause his downfall.
Mingjue's deep-rooted and extreme feelings were not only centered around his family, though, for others had a firm place in his heart. His childhood friend, Lan Xichen, and his most trusted advisor, Jin Guangyao, were such examples. He would give to them selflessly at every opportunity he could. He relied upon them selflessly, considering their connection to him more profound than simple friendship. But in some regards, Mingjue tended to be too selfless. The inevitable lesson was that not everyone would act as generously as he had—a challenging task for him.
Mingjue offered Guangyao a life-changing opportunity at a new clan, only to walk in on him, slaughtering one of his men in cold blood. It formed a feeling of distrust that was pushed even further when Mingjue next saw Guangyao fighting beside the Wens and killing Mingjues soldiers. At that point, Guangyao developed an irreparable tear in Mingjues' sense of trust. And so Mingjue jumped from one extreme to another. Once a man who trusted others almost selflessly, Mingjue became riddled with paranoia due to the hurt he had felt from such a betrayal.
Despite losing his trust in Guangyao, he swore into a pact of brotherhood with his closest friends. This pact was an attempt to keep his sense of selflessness despite what had happened. He saw how his other friend, Xichen, struggled because of the other's conflicts. And he hated knowing that he was causing a rift between all his loved ones. And so he gave in, hoping that he could ignore his feelings for everyone else's happiness. But keeping silent only allowed his paranoia to simmer over time. His curse goes unchecked because of a lack of care for his emotional state during the ordeal.
This paranoia, mixed with the building rage that continued to build over time, only continued to fuel the curse that bubbled within him. Of course, he did his best to ignore it, but he often argued with the others. Only sticking around for what he presumes was Xichen's happiness, and this one strand of loyalty would ultimately lead to his downfall.
Mingjue's need to ignore his feelings formed a toxic dynamic of false friendship hanging by a thread for years. But Lan Xichen did not wish to listen to Guangyao or Mingjue's complaints about one another, doing his best to repair the rift between them constantly. Mingjue, in turn, repeatedly tried his best to do as Xichen requested. The skepticism between all three of them would eventually bubble over when Guangyao took his father's side over Mingjues' as the two clans came at odds, a decision that finally snapped what little was left of Nie Mingjue's control.
It was in a fit of rage that Mingjue reacted. Seeing Guangyao's refusal to help him as an outright betrayal, he hurt the other man in the worst way he knew. He insulted Guangyao's mother publicly before kicking him down the stairs of Guangyao's own home in Koi Tower. At that moment, the saber curse had its hold. All he felt was anger and rage, and he wished to exert it and have others share the pain he felt in the most destructive way possible.
And yet, for reasons unknown to Mingjue, Jin Guangyao agreed with Lan Xichen in forgiving the transgression and helping quell the symptoms of Mingjue's curse. Mingjue was wary, the logical part of his mind was not completely gone just yet despite his escalating sickness, and he still doubted Guanjyao's intentions. But everyone around him regarded him only as paranoid, chalking up his doubts about Guangyao's participation as the byproduct of the curse. And it was everyone else ignoring his concerns that ultimately sealed his death.
In the end, it was technically Guangyao that killed Mingjue. The other man has found a curse that quickened Mingjue's symptoms—poisoning Mingjue repeatedly until the curse took complete hold. But it was still Mingjue's rage that caused his heart to stop, turning him into an undead corpse consumed with nothing but irrational anger.
Nie Mingjue is a victim of circumstance, his family, and the society in which he was forced to survive. But it makes him far from infallible. As his single-minded, stubborn, and obsessively devoted demeanor had, in turn, willingly led him to his own grave. And yet, despite knowing what it would do, he did it regardless, for what he considered the greater good goes above anything else. Sacrificial to a fault, prone to bouts of anger, bloodthirsty, and unforgiving, Nie Mingjue is also loyal, selfless, and dedicated. Because of this, I look forward to exploring his ways of thinking in a setting that would cause him to question his biased viewpoints.
What did they do to end up here?: You know, the usual; murder, assault, war crimes, and a splash of property damage for the many times he kicked himself through walls and doors to make a dramatic entrance.
Powers / Abilities:
Sword Flight - If he ever receives his sword back, he can imbue his spiritual energy into it and control it to fly to his will. It can even support his weight so that he can surf and fly upon it across great distances.
Steel Skin - Not literally, but Nie Mingjue's flesh is known to be so invulnerable that not even metal blades can normally cut through it.

Powers / Abilities:
- Cultivation- Being the first son of one of the four most renowned sects within the cultivation world, he is a master cultivator with a extensive knowledge martial arts, swordplay, and talisman magic. He is especially skilled with his family's cultivation, which utilizes the slaughter and blood of beasts, using the animal's resentful energy to fuel the energy of their swords. The Nies also have a specific connection to their swords that most other sects don't have where they cannot be parted from them for too long, and whatever damage can occur to their sword can also, in turn, be caused to them.
Superhuman Strength- Where many cultivators can train their bodies and spiritual energy together to manipulate their strength, Nie Mingjue manages to take this step tenfold. Advertised as one of the top three physically strongest characters in the series, he can lift multiple people with one arm, punch through stone walls like it's nothing, and punch through a human with a single punch. He could slaughter an entire village with a single disembodied arm when he was undead in canon.
Spiritual Manipulation- Like all cultivators, he can manipulate and harness his spiritual energy and project it outwards. Using the resentful spirits of the beasts he had slaughtered with his sword and his qi, he can control his sword without holding it. He can use it to project towards his opponents, fight others without even being close, and even stand upon it as he makes it float to fly! Sky surfing on your sword, anyone?
Martial Arts Master- Being the leader of the Qinghe Nie sect, he is the martial master of his clan and the one who teaches and supports the cultivation of sword fighting and military techniques of his family. His expertise is in using the saber, his sword Baxia almost always found at his side due to the spiritual attachment he holds to it.
